HSGBB: Washington’s 31-point night powers BA into second round

Mike’Ala Washington dropped 31 points and Tahleea Heyward added 17 to lead Beaufort Academy girls basketball to a 57-46 victory over Spartanburg Day in the first round of the SCISA 2A state tournament Friday at the Sumter Civic Center.

Washington lit it up at the offensive end, while Heyward had a terrific night on both ends of the court and Kamirah Freeman added eight points for the Eagles.

“Proud of how we battled tonight,” BA coach Andrew Ienuso said. “We played great defensively, forcing a lot of turnovers that allowed us to get out in transition. We sustained a big comeback run from Spartanburg Day in the fourth quarter. I’m really proud of how we kept our composure under pressure tonight.“

BA (18-6) will face top-seeded Pee Dee Academy at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Sumter Civic Center.
