HSGBB: Dolphins dominate Panthers in playoff opener

Hilton Head Prep girls basketball cruised into the second round of the SCISA 3A state tournament with a dominant 58-28 win over Pinewood Prep on Friday at Cathedral Academy.

The Panthers knocked down a pair of early 3-pointers to take a 6-0 lead, but the Dolphins answered with a quick 11-0 run and never looked back. HHP held Pinewood to one point in the second quarter to open up a 34-11 halftime lead and coasted to a convincing win.

Freshman guard Courtney Campbell led the way for the Dolphins with 22 points, four steals, and four assists, while senior Katie Campbell added 11 points and six assists, Ella Clark contributed seven points and five rebounds, and Haylee Hopman chipped in six points.

X’Zoria Vaughn scored 12 points to lead the Panthers.

“Tonight’s game was very physical, which really suits our style of play,” HHP coach Phillip Hartman said. “This was a good win and we are looking ahead to our match up against Cardinal Newman.”

The Dolphins will face the three-time defending champion Cardinals at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Sumter Civic Center.
