HSGBB: JPII advances in defensive struggle with Crusaders

John Paul II girls basketball extended its season by knocking off a higher-seeded team in the first round of the SCISA 2A playoffs Friday, holding off Shannon Forest for a 37-31 win at Hammond School in Columbia.

Cayce Graves scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds and Brady Mahoney collected 12 points and 11 boards to lead the Golden Warriors to an upset in a defensive struggle. Maddie Heathcott contributed six points, 11 rebounds, and five steals while holding down a difficult defensive assignment and knocked down a pair of free throws late to help seal it.

“I’m so proud of these girls and the way they played tonight,” JPII coach Karen Floyd said. “We handled the pressure, cut down on turnovers, played good help defense, and knocked down shots. They looked great.”

JPII (10-10) will face Orangeburg Prep at 8 p.m. Monday at the Sumter Civic Center after the Indians (19-2) defeated Carolina Academy 55-23 on Friday.
