HSGBB: Young’s buzzer-beater gives Seahawks massive road win

With a statement road win on the line, Hilton Head High girls basketball coach Russell Raniszewski knew who to turn to. Sophomore Lynda Young drained a game-winning shot at the buzzer, and the Seahawks shocked James Island 46-44 on Tuesday to hand the Trojans their second straight Region 7-4A loss.

After finishing a close first quarter trailing 9-8, the Seahawks fell further behind in the second as Andrea Duncan’s eight points in the period lifted the Trojans to a 22-14 halftime lead. But Young found her game in the second half, dominating at the rim and getting to the line for nine points in the third to cut the deficit to just three.

In a back-and-forth duel down the stretch between Young and Duncan, the Seahawk star had the final word. Hilton Head High brought the ball up with just seconds to play in a 44-44 tie, and a cold-blooded Young knocked down the shot at the buzzer to give the Seahawks a monster road win.

Young’s heroics capped off another magnificent night for the sophomore, putting up 23 points. Janiya Ferebee had a huge 10 to help the Seahawks rally back, and Chyna Fields added eight including a pair of buckets in the fourth quarter.

Duncan scored a game-high 24 points for James Island, which was undefeated in region play before suffering an overtime loss to first-place Bluffton on Friday.

Hilton Head High (7-9, 2-3) will look to keep the momentum rolling on Friday with another key Region 7-4A matchup at Lucy Beckham.
