HSWR: Vigh delivers Seahawks’ 7th pin for clincher vs. Creek

It came down to the final bout of the night, but Hilton Head High’s Drew Vigh delivered with a late pin to push the Seahawk wrestling team past visiting Battery Creek 42-33 on Thursday. Each team won seven weight classes, but the Seahawks’ seven pins carried the night in a thrilling non-region matchup.

Bradley Smith put the Dolphins on the board first with an 8-4 decision, but Darnell Brawner, KJ Holland, and Jimmy Jacobs scored three straight pins to propel the Seahawks to an 18-3 lead. Battery Creek’s Hunter Smith and Dre’shaun Brown won a pair of close decisions to tighten the score, and Daniel Sunkins followed it up with a pin to trim the Hilton Head lead to 18-15.

The Seahawks quickly rattled off a trio of pins from Brayven Shapiro, Jessie Salinas, and William Jakeway, but the Dolphins’ Reilly Doray made quick work of Mack Ford with a first-period pin before Sam DeGroat pinned Zao Estrada in the night’s marquee matchup to trim the home advantage to 36-27.

A Hilton Head forfeit gave Battery Creek six more points, sending the contest to a decisive final match between Vigh and the Dolphins’ Aiden Northway. The Seahawk star dominated from the first whistle, scoring three takedowns in the opening period and another in the second before wrapping it up in the third with a pin to clinch the victory.

Battery Creek is back in action on Friday at the Coach Trap Duals, while the Seahawks prepare for a Region 7-4A tri-match at May River on Wednesday.
