May River girls basketball closed out the calendar year with a solid road win Thursday, beating Hanahan 42-28.

The Sharks set the tone with a terrific defensive effort in the first quarter, running out to an 18-6 lead after the first period and maintaining the 12-point margin through halftime.

The Hawks clawed back within 32-27 heading to the fourth quarter, but May River was able to clamp down and hold Hanahan to one point in the final stanza to close it out.

Morgan Scott scored 14 points to lead the way for May River, while Morgan Kronimus added nine, and Kennedy Palmer had eight.

May River (5-5, 1-1) resumes region play at home against rival Bluffton on Tuesday.
