HS GTEN: Seahawks fall short vs. Bengals in Lower State semis

Hilton Head High’s girls tennis season ended at the hands of region rival Lucy Beckham for the second straight season, as the Bengals edged the Seahawks 4-3 on Monday in the Class 4A Lower State semifinals.

The defending state champion Bengals swept both regular-season meetings, winning 5-2 and 4-2, but the Seahawks narrowed the gap in the postseason rematch, as No. 2 Hailey Poplin and No. 3 Danielle Silvan delivered victories in singles and Hailey Cruz and Lilly Friday won at No. 2 doubles.

Lucy Beckham was too tough at the top of the lineup, though, as state singles champion Piper Charney avenged last month’s loss to Emily Ruckno at No. 1, then teamed with Perrin Rogers for a clinching win at No. 1 doubles.

HHIHS finishes the season with a 15-5 record and will send Ruckno to the state singles tournament Monday and Tuesday. She was runner-up to Charney a year ago. Silvan has also been selected to play in the North-South All-Star event on Nov. 12 in Myrtle Beach.
