BKB: HHIHS alum Coltrane takes job with UVA women’s hoops

After a one-year stop at Chapin High School, Jacob Coltrane is taking his coaching skills back to the college level.

The former Hilton Head Island High Seahawk announced Tuesday that he has accepted a position at the University of Virginia as the Director of Scouting and Video Services for the women’s basketball program.

A former Erskine College hoops commit, the 25-year-old honed his coaching craft at the University of South Carolina under legendary head coach Dawn Staley. Coltrane served as a practice player for the women’s team for three years during his time as an undergraduate, including for the 2017 national championship squad. He then stayed with the Gamecocks after graduation, spending two years learning the ropes of coaching as a graduate assistant.

In 2020, Coltrane became the head coach of the Chapin High School girls’ program before returning to the college game in Charlottesville a year later.

Led by Tina Thompson, who is in her fourth season at the helm of the program, the Cavaliers are looking to rebound from an unfortunate 2020-21 season after cancelling the remainder of their campaign in January due to COVID-19 concerns.
