The first female wrestler to medal in the S.C. High School League State Championships is now an All-American.
Hilton Head High’s Zao Estrada, who made history when she placed third in the SCHSL State Championships last winter, added to her impressive resume last week with a runner-up finish at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior and 16U National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota.
Estrada won her first four bouts in dominant fashion before suffering a 4-2 defeat to Michigan’s Cecilia Williams in the finals of the girls 112-pound division, earning All-America honors in the process.
After a first-round bye, Estrada won four straight matches by major decision, easily controlling her matches against New York’s Emily Frost (11-0), California’s Presley Anderson (12-0), Tennessee’s Ella-Lina Gonzalez (14-2), and Connecticut’s Calli Gilchrist (12-1) to reach the finals.
Estrada is a rising sophomore at Hilton Head High.
