With her Hilton Head High soccer career hanging in the balance, Abbie Lainhart delivered a postseason performance for the ages. The senior and Western Carolina signee exploded for a four-goal night Wednesday, willing her Seahawks to a 5-3 comeback victory in overtime at Aiken to advance to the second round of the SCHSL 4A playoffs.
The Seahawks fell behind 3-1 at the halfway stage on a trio of Green Hornet set-piece goals in the opening 40 minutes. After a few adjustments during the break, Hilton Head High stormed back in the second half to hand Aiken just its second loss of the season.
Lainhart buried a feed from Anna Kurtz to cut the deficit to one, and Whitney McGuire knocked in the equalizer to send the contest to extra time. It was the Abbie Lainhart show the rest of the way, as the stellar striker added two more goals to seal the 5-3 come-from-behind victory.
“These student-athletes never quit,” HHIHS head coach Kit Seelbach said. “It was an entire team effort. Abbie played the most inspired game. She stepped up and led her team to this round one playoff win.”
Hilton Head High (10-5, 8-2) is right back on the road Thursday to continue its postseason run at Myrtle Beach.
