HS SB: Trojans hit Weathers, but can’t quiet red-hot Cougars’ bats

Someone finally got to Colleton County softball star Whitley Weathers in the circle, but they couldn’t slow down her bat. The usually dominant Weathers was dinged for eight runs Friday, but she went 3-for-5 with six RBIs to help power the Cougars to a 12-8 road win over James Island to finish off a perfect regular season.

The Trojans banged out 17 hits — including three each from four different players — but the Cougars smacked 20 hits of their own and built an early 7-1 lead before holding off a James Island rally for the win.

Weathers struck out eight and allowed eight runs and 17 hits, but she did not issue a walk and continued her hot hitting with a double, a pair of singles, and six RBIs to lead a balanced offense.

Shandi Brown was 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and three runs, and Makayla Chisolm went 3-for-5 with an RBI and scored twice for the Cougars. Sydney Howard, Shamorie Overton, Mackenzie Pellum, and Lanasia Sanders each added two hits, and Pellum and Sanders each drove in a run.

The Cougars (13-0, 10-0) will be the top seed from Region 7-4A in the Class 4A playoffs beginning May 17.
