Wes Graves threw a three-hit, complete-game gem, and Beaufort High triumphed at Colleton County 2-0 in an outstanding eight-inning pitching duel Wednesday.
Neither team could push across a run in the first seven frames, as Beaufort’s Graves and Colleton County’s Gabe Wolf were fantastic on the mound, combining for just five hits allowed in the ballgame.
The Eagles broke through in the top of the eighth as a James Davenport walk and Zach Talbert single put two men on with nobody out, and both came around to score after a passed ball and error. Colleton County started a two-out rally with a pair of Eagle miscues, but Graves retired the next batter to give his team the crucial victory.
The Beaufort starter was stellar from start to finish, scattering just three hits in eight innings while striking out five batters. Talbert picked up a clutch hit in extra innings to lead the Eagle offense.
Wolf put up a dazzling performance in defeat, going the distance and giving up just two hits while picking up five strikeouts. Michael Ortiz was strong from the leadoff spot for the Cougars, going 2-for-4 on the game.
Beaufort High (8-7, 6-2) hosts Savannah Christian on Thursday.
Colleton County (4-13, 1-7) battles May River at home Monday.
