Hilton Head High embraced the underdog role and put up a fight, but No. 2 seed May River held off the Seahawks’ best effort for an 11-7 home win Wednesday in the first round of the SCHSL Class 4A boys lacrosse playoffs.
It was a night of milestones for the Sharks, who earned their first postseason victory with the aid of senior star Rob Gadomski’s 100th career goal. Gadomski finished with two goals and an assist to go along with three goals and an assist from sophomore standout Brooks van Esselstyn.
Ethan Sotiropoulos and Ben Marler added two goals each, and Hudson Kramer dished out two assists for the Sharks. Thomas Raisch gathered a team-high eight groundballs to go with a goal, Jacob Bollinger scooped six groundballs, and Rett Harrell anchored the defense and neutralized the Seahawks’ top attacker.
May River goalie Corbin Wiltse had a huge night, stopping 70 percent of the shots he faced with a career-high 16 saves.
The Sharks (12-4) will host Christ Church out of Greenville in the second round at 1 p.m. Saturday.
