Colleton County baseball squandered a three-run lead in the seventh inning and suffered a heartbreaking 8-7 loss in eight innings Thursday against visiting Oceanside Collegiate.
The Cougars jumped on the Class 3A power Landsharks early, scoring three runs in the second and three more in the fourth for a 6-2 lead. It tightened to 7-4 going to the seventh, but JT Walker kept the inning alive with a two-out single, and Joseph McCormick tied it with a bases-clearing double to force extras.
The Landsharks mustered another two-out rally in the eighth, as a two-out hit by pitch set the stage for Andrew Bowers’ go-ahead double and the Cougars left the tying run at first.
JC Poe was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Ben Kennedy and Cam Farnsworth added RBI doubles for the Cougars. Bruce Carpenter also had a run-scoring hit for Colleton.
Gabe Wolf limited a powerful Oceanside lineup to two runs and two hits over four innings before the Landsharks were able to rally against the bullpen.
The Cougars (4-9) are back to Region 7-4A play Monday at first-place James Island.
