Hilton Head High boys soccer fought hard against a strong James Island team Tuesday night, but the Seahawks suffered a tough 1-0 home loss in extra time.
The Trojans were the better side in the opening half, but the hometown Seahawks improved their play as the first 40 minutes went on. Hilton Head brought the momentum into the second half, creating a flurry of scoring chances at the Trojan net and taking five unanswered shots.
The home squad launched a free kick that was blocked in the final minutes and nearly scored on a two-on-one opportunity called offside. After a quiet first period of overtime, HHIHS was awarded another free kick within striking range, but the shot was easily saved by the James Island keeper.
With under a minute left in the second half of extra time, the Trojans sent in a ball from the midfield sideline and popped a rebound into the net to score the game-winning goal.
Danny Claudio displayed a valiant effort between the pipes, making five saves for the Seahawks.
Hilton Head High (6-2, 3-1) hosts Lucy Beckham for another region clash Friday.
