May River boys lacrosse went toe-to-toe with Region 7-4A leader Lucy Beckham for three quarters Monday, but the Bengals surged ahead in the fourth quarter for a pivotal 11-8 victory over the visiting Sharks.
The competition was close throughout, but the Bengals rattled off three consecutive goals in the final period, and the Sharks’ late surge fell short.
Brooks van Esselstyn led the Sharks in scoring with three goals and one assist. Rob Gadomski notched one goal and one assist, while Andrew Dromsky (1G, 1A), Mike Gonzales (2G), and Hudson Kramer (1G) also added to the Sharks’ scoring.
Senior defenseman Rett Harrell led the Shark defense with two takeaways and six groundballs, while junior goalie Corbin Wiltse had 10 saves.
Eli Hall went 9-of-17 on faceoffs while van Esselstyn provided a late surge going 2-for-2 on the dot at the end of the game.
The Sharks (10-3, 6-2) play their final region game at home against Bluffton on Monday.
