HS BSB: Martucci mows down Mustangs for Bobcats’ first win

Nico Martucci struck out nine in a complete game and added a pair of hits as Bluffton blanked Midland Valley 8-0 on Monday at USC Salkehatchie in Allendale.

Martucci went the distance in a six-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks, but the outcome was still in doubt for most of the night.

Midland Valley’s Ethan Hutto matched zeroes with Martucci for five innings, limiting the Bobcats to three hits, but when the Mustangs went to the bullpen, Bluffton took advantage. Martucci kept the inning alive with a two-out single in the sixth to move Jayden Timmins to third, and Nate Hoyt squeezed Timmins home with a bunt single to break the scoreless tie.

Martucci worked out of a jam after two Bluffton errors in the bottom half, then the Bobcats erupted for seven runs in the seventh. Cody Bradt broke it open with a two-run single, and Cameron Poliquin and Timmins drove in runs before a pair of costly errors allowed Bluffton to plate three more.

Timmins, Martucci, and Hoyt each had two hits, and Bradt and Eric Eastham drove in two runs apiece for the Bobcats.

Bluffton (1-4) hosts East Clarendon on Friday before resuming Region 7-4A play Monday at Colleton County.
