John Paul II softball scored 11 runs in the first inning and rolled to an 18-3 home win over Beaufort Academy on Thursday.
Cayce Graves earned the win in the circle for JPII, allowing just two hits. The Eagles got to her for three runs in the first, as the first six batters of the game reached base with Riley Gates drawing a bases-loaded walk to open the scoring and Maddie Nelson adding a two-run double for a 3-0 lead.
The Golden Warriors responded in a major way, though, as JPII’s first seven batters reached base and six runs crossed the plate before BA could record an out. JPII kept the rally going with two outs, as eight straight found a way on base to bring in five more runs for an 11-3 advantage.
Graves settled in after that and recorded a huge strikeout to leave two runners in scoring position in the second, and the Golden Warriors put up six more runs in the bottom half to blow it open. BA put two more runners on in the third, but Graves came up with two straight strikeouts to end the threat, and JPII tacked on another run in the bottom half to invoke the mercy rule.
Graves also had a monster day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two walks, four runs, and a home run, and Caroline Gilmour was 3-for-4 with a single and two doubles for JPII. Maddie Heathcott added a double and a walk and scored three runs.
JPII (2-3) travels to Thomas Heyward on Monday.
BA (1-5) plays at Colleton Prep on Monday.
