John Paul II baseball erupted for 19 runs in the fifth inning to blow open a close game and claim a 21-0 victory at Beaufort Academy on Thursday.
It was a 2-0 game going to the fifth, when JPII sent 24 batters to the plate and kept the carousel spinning to the tune of 19 runs after BA’s pitching staff became depleted.
The biggest blow was a grand slam to center by Peter Hughes that made it 11-0, and Hayden Jennings added a three-run blast later in the inning.
Hughes went 4-for-4 with four runs and five RBIs in the leadoff spot, and Jennings was 3-for-3 with a triple, a homer, four runs, and six RBIs. Rance Jennings went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, and Nate McDonough was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs, and two driven in.
Hayden Jennings also earned the win on the mound, striking out six and allowing two hits and one walk over 4 2-3 scoreless innings.
JPII (3-5, 3-3) plays a key region game at Thomas Heyward on Monday.
BA hosts Colleton Prep for a region matchup Monday.
