May River baseball jumped out to an early lead, and right-hander Bennett Roemer slammed the door with 3 1-3 innings of dominant relief work as the Sharks beat visiting Bluffton 6-2 on Wednesday to complete a two-game sweep of the rival Bobcats.
The Sharks wasted no time getting started at the plate, as James Layman drew a leadoff walk and Darin Horn and Walker Taylor followed with back-to-back doubles, the latter knocking in two runs before the Bobcats recorded an out.
Bluffton’s Eric Eastham settled in and got out of the jam without further damage, and the Bobcats pulled one back in the second on Jayden Timmins’ RBI groundout scoring Nate Hoyt.
May River flipped the lineup over in the third and extended the lead with a Caleb Allinder sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Zack Morillo, but the Bobcats chipped away again in the fourth, as Eastham led off with a double and courtesy runner Sean Sullivan came around and scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-2.
The top of the lineup delivered for the Sharks two more times, as Layman came through with a two-out RBI single to score Riley Stokes, who doubled with one out in the fourth, then came through in the clutch with another two-out knock scoring Brayden Brooks in the sixth.
Stokes pitched the first 3 2-3 innings for the Sharks, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Roemer was electric in relief once again, striking out eight and allowing one hit and one walk over 3 1-3 scoreless frames.
Layman, Horn, and Morillo each had two hits for the Sharks.
May River (4-5, 2-2) opens a key Region 7-4A series at Beaufort High on Monday.
Bluffton (0-4, 0-4) plays non-region games at USC Salkehatchie on Friday and Monday, taking on Barnwell and Midland Valley.
