Beaufort High’s Wes Graves went toe-to-toe with Clemson signee Hogan Garner, but James Island broke through with two outs in the seventh to escape with a 2-1 home win Wednesday and a split of a two-game Region 7-4A baseball series.
The Trojans opened the scoring on Noah Brown’s RBI single in the second, but Graves matched zeroes with Garner until Rhogue Wallace jumped on a 1-0 pitch for a leadoff homer to right in the fifth to tie it.
The Eagles loaded the bases in the sixth but couldn’t push across a run, and they had two men on with one out in the seventh but came up empty.
Graves struck out the leadoff hitter in the seventh, but a walk, single, and hit by pitch loaded the bases with one away. Graves fielded Brown’s squeeze attempt and got the force at home to record the second out, but a wild pitch with Garner at the plate allowed Keillor Osbon to score the winning run.
Graves allowed two runs and four hits over 6 2-3 innings, striking out five and walking three in an impressive performance. Garner struck out seven, walked three, and allowed one run and three hits in a complete game.
Ollie Holmes and Rush Riley also had hits for the Eagles.
Beaufort (3-3, 1-1) hosts undefeated SCISA power Hilton Head Prep on Saturday.
