Beaufort High baseball went toe-to-toe with Class 3A power Oceanside Collegiate for five innings Tuesday at Shipyard Park in Mount Pleasant, but the Landsharks struck for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to claim a 9-3 victory.
The Landsharks strung together three singles to plate a run in the first, but the Eagles answered with three in the second, taking advantage of four walks and a hit batter.
Beaufort had two men aboard via walk in the third but couldn’t score, and they left the bases loaded in the fourth. OCA made the Eagles pay in the bottom half, plating two on a Cameron Sebuck single and a Beaufort error.
Jackson Sobel sat down the next six Eagles, and the Landsharks locked in at the plate in the sixth, scoring six runs on six straight hits, the biggest being a bases-clearing triple from Tagger Tyson to break it open.
Sobel slammed the door with another 1-2-3 inning, retiring the last 10 batters to finish with 10 strikeouts in 5 1-3 innings of scoreless relief and earn the win.
Starter Wes Graves kept the Eagles in it with four strong innings, holding a potent OCA lineup to three runs (two earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk, but the bullpen couldn’t keep it up.
Matt Bornsheuer and William Winburn had the only hits for the Eagles, who drew seven walks and a hit-by-pitch.
The Eagles (2-2) open Region 7-4A play at home against James Island on Monday.
