HS BSB: HHCA bats break out in first win

Hilton Head Christian Academy baseball notched its first win of the season in a strong 16-5 road victory Friday over Memorial Day.

The Matadors struck first with a run in the bottom of the first, but HHCA responded right away in the second to even the game. The Eagles surged ahead 4-1 in the third thanks to a three-run frame led by a Michael Zoodsma two-run homer — a blast to straight-away center — but Memorial Day got a pair back in the bottom half to make it 4-3.

HHCA didn’t let it get any closer, scoring nine unanswered runs in the next two innings to pull away before closing it out in the sixth to earn the run-rule victory.

Jackson Lanier led the Eagle offense, posting a 3-for-5 day at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Zoodsma added two hits and RBIs including a home run, and Keene Reese drove in a team-high three runs. Jace Blackshear picked up the win on the mound with six strikeouts, and Lanier put in a solid fifth inning, allowing no earned runs while recording all three outs via strikeout.

HHCA (1-6, 0-4) travels to Beaufort Academy on Thursday.
