Zoe Paulmeier netted the double-overtime winner, and Bluffton girls lacrosse pulled out an 8-7 thriller on the road Thursday against rival Hilton Head High.
The Seahawks took a 4-2 halftime lead on the strength of two goals from Anna Ferrebee, but the Bobcats responded right away with a pair just three minutes into the second half to tie the game at 4. Both squads traded a pair of goals each to make it 6-6 with 5:40 to play, and Bluffton grabbed its first lead of the game on a free-position marker from Lauren Black.
HHIHS found the equalizer just seconds later on Ferebee’s third goal of the night, sending the rivalry game to overtime. The ‘Hawks had the better of the chances in the first extra session, but they couldn’t convert. With 1:48 to go in double-overtime, Bluffton got its opportunity and made it count. Paulmeier found a lane to the slot and slung a beauty past Megan Rickenback to clinch a spectacular comeback victory.
Sophie Chambella put up a stellar performance in the massive win, leading the Bobcats with three goals and three assists for six points. The duo of Talia Vaught and Black netted a pair of goals each, and Paulmeier’s only tally was the biggest of them all. Brilee Larson was strong in net, picking up nine saves to earn the win.
Ferrebee notched a hat trick to lead Hilton Head High, and Sarah Kate Shupp added a pair.
Bluffton (3-2) travels to James Island on Monday.
