JPII boys soccer pulled off an amazing comeback after a slow start against visiting Hilton Head Christian Academy on Thursday, scoring twice in the final seven minutes of regulation to force overtime and winning in a penalty shootout.
The Eagles led 3-1 with seven minutes left in regulation on the strength of two Cameron Strickland goals and another from JP Peduzzi. HHCA mostly held the Golden Warriors at bay to that point, only allowing a Colin Anfinson goal in the 38th minute off an assist from Anthony Hill.
It was Hill who became the hero at the end of the regulation, converting an incredible assist from Austin Floyd to put JPII within striking distance in the 73rd minute. He delivered again six minutes later from the penalty spot, forcing overtime.
Neither team could capitalize in the two extra periods, sending the match to a penalty shootout, where Evan Slusne made two key saves to go with his nine in regulation, and Ben Quinty delivered the game-sealing strike in the shootout.
“This was a true team victory,” JPII coach Josh Fox said. “Everyone contributed.”
JPII (3-0, 1-0) was back in action Friday at Beaufort High.
HHCA (1-1, 0-1) hosts Holy Trinity on Thursday.
