HSBBB: Sharks get defensive to lock down first W

May River’s boys used a strong defensive showing to lock up their first victory of the season Saturday, holding off visiting South Effingham for a 48-40 win.

Gavin Blocker poured in 21 points, and Jason Epke-Bueso added 12 to lead the offensive attack for the Sharks, who nursed a lead all night and closed it out by spreading the floor and running clock for the final four minutes.

Guards Steffin Gadson and James Layman led the stifling defensive effort for May River, containing the Mustangs’ top offensive threat.

The Sharks (1-1) travel to SCISA 3A power Pinewood Prep on Tuesday.
