Hilton Head High’s girls didn’t make new coach Russell Raniszewski wait long for his first victory, using a stifling defensive effort in the second half to pick up a 40-33 road win at Oceanside Collegiate in Friday’s season opener.
Lynda Young and Anna Genova each scored 10 points, and Janiya Ferebee added nine to lead the Seahawks, who outscored the Landsharks 12-5 in the fourth quarter to pull away.

The Seahawks led 18-16 at halftime, but OCA pulled even at 28 going to the fourth. HHIHS switched up its defenses and made several key stops down the stretch, including huge steals from Hope Dobbelaere and Chyna Fields. The Seahawks also did a better job of limiting second-chance opportunities in the second half.
HHIHS could have closed it out earlier if it could have taken better advantage of layups and free throws, as the Seahawks were just 12-of-31 from the foul line, including 8-of-18 in the fourth quarter. Young took advantage at the line, though, making 4-of-6 in the final period to help seal the win.
HHIHS (1-0) travels to Richmond Hill (Ga.) at 6 p.m. Friday.
