HSWR: 10 Lowco wrestlers in semis at 4A Lower State

Ten area wrestlers — including six from Beaufort High — are still undefeated after the first day of the Class 4A Lower State qualifier at Bluffton High School.

Beaufort sent six wrestlers through to the semifinals and has another seven alive in the consolation bracket and vying for one of the four qualifying spots in each weight class for next week’s state championships. Gary Bayne (106) and Colton Phares (145) each won twice Friday for Beaufort, while Matthew Durrance (138), James Dagin (152), Jeremiah Simmons (160), and Michael Cenci (170) each went 1-0 following a first-round bye. The Eagles’ team score of 49.5 points is second behind North Myrtle Beach (54).

Hilton Head High has four wrestlers in the semifinals — Jesus Catalan (106), James Levy (113), Drew Vigh (126), and Santiago Rueda (132) — and the host Bobcats still have Daniel Ussery (160) and Xavier Dykstra (220) in the championship bracket.

Wrestling resumes at 8 a.m. Saturday with the championship semifinals.
