May River’s boys opened their Class 3A state title defense with a 3-1 win over third-ranked Academic Magnet on Friday in the Charleston Shootout.
The top-ranked Sharks bolted to a 2-0 lead, as Conner Golden scored off a Joel Fleek assist in the eighth minute to start the scoring, and Chris Pineda made it 2-0 in the 15th minute off another Fleek assist.
The Raptors cut the lead to 2-1 in the 30th minute, but Fleek scored the final goal of the game in the 62nd minute off a Golden assist.
May River’s defense was dominant, holding the Raptors to two shots on goal with Sebastian Orlando making the lone save.
