Candor USA Lowco Wrestling Spotlight, Dec. 16

Each Monday throughout the high school wrestling season, we will recognize the standouts from the previous week’s action.

We will select two Wrestlers of the Week — one in the lower weights (106-145) and one in the upper weights (152-285) — as well as a Team of the Week.

Here’s this week’s installment of the Lowco Wrestling Spotlight presented by Candor USA.

LOWER WEIGHTS WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
James Levy, HHIHS

After being dealt an early defeat in the finals of the May River Invitational, Levy bounced back with an impressive week. The Seahawks’ 113-pounder pinned the top-ranked 106-pounder in the state of Georgia while going 2-0 at a double dual early in the week, then won the 113-pound title at the Effingham County Rebel Invitational over the weekend.

UPPER WEIGHTS WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
Kailin Prescott-Ferguson, MRHS

“Big Man” got in on the action this week after taking a week off to transition from football, and he is off to a dominant start to the season. The Sharks’ senior 285-pounder picked up a pin against Beaufort High and went undefeated at the Cane Bay Duals.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
May River Sharks

The Sharks put to rest any argument about the Lowco’s top wrestling team with a dominant 54-18 win over Beaufort High on Wednesday, then went 4-1 to place third at the Cane Bay Duals. And May River is still far from full strength. The Sharks were without state runner-up Rod Grant this weekend, and they still have several wrestlers trying to get to their ideal weight classes.

MATCH OF THE WEEK
Hilton Head High High at May River, 6 p.m. Wednesday

The Seahawks are the only other team with a chance to lay claim to the title of the Lowco’s best, but they face a daunting test in The Tank on Wednesday. May River should have the upper-hand overall, but there’s the potential for some intriguing matchups, including a possible rematch between Isham Peace and James Levy at 113 and a clash between “Big Man” and Alfred Young at heavyweight.
