HSWR: Sharks earn statement win over Eagles

May River made a convincing statement as the area’s best wrestling team with an impressive 54-18 win over visiting Beaufort High on Wednesday.

Jeremiah Simmons (170) and John Legree (195) earned pins to stake the Eagles to a 12-3 lead, but Beaufort forfeited to Rod Grant at 220 to begin a streak of eight consecutive wins for the Sharks. The Eagles had a chance to tie it at 15 when the 106-pound match went to overtime, but May River’s Noah Creque scored a takedown in the extra period to claim a 9-7 decision over Gary Bayne in the best match of the night.

Kailin “Big Man” Prescott-Ferguson (285), Travis Tran (113), Isham Peace (120), CJ Ciccarelli (132), and Patrick Treacy (138) all scored pins during the pivotal stretch, as May River extended its lead to 45-12.

Matthew Durrance (145) stopped the bleeding with a pin, but that was the Eagles’ last win of the night.

Gabriel Juarez (152) also won by pin for the Sharks, and Anthon Funderburk (182), Chad Hadden (126) and Wyatt Banfield earned decisions.
