May River’s boys held off a late charge from visiting Beaufort High on Tuesday to open their season with a 61-58 victory.
The Sharks led by 16 with five minutes left, but the Eagles stormed back to pull within one with 10 seconds left before May River sunk two free throws and Beaufort’s 3-pointer to tie it at the buzzer was off the mark.
Harry Cash scored 13 points, Gavin Blocker added 12, and Jason Epke-Bueso contributed 10 for the Sharks, who had nine players score.
Ollie Holmes had 17 points and Rush Riley scored 14 to lead the Eagles, while Zyrin Odom added six points and 11 boards.
The Sharks (1-0) travel to crosstown rival Bluffton at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Eagles (1-2) host Summerville at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
