Hilton Head High’s girls opened their season with a 55-41 win at Wade Hampton on Tuesday.
Kenzie Ryan led all scorers with 21 points, while Miley Ray added 16, and Emma Moore tacked on 8 for the Seahawks.
Hilton Head trailed by as much as eight points in the first half, and fell behind again midway through the third quarter after leading 22-20 at halftime. The Seahawks went 9-for-9 from the foul line in the fourth quarter and held Wade Hampton to six points in the final period to seal the victory.
“We weren’t really sure what to expect tonight with such an inexperienced group,” Seahawks coach Sean Rochester said. “I told them jokingly that Miley Ray probably has played more minutes in her four previous years than the rest of the team has combined experience. To their credit, though, those kids stepped up and we got contributions from a lot of new faces.”
The Seahawks (1-0) return to action Friday at the Nest against island rival Hilton Head Prep at 6 p.m.
