HSXC: Sharks, Belden run strong at Cici’s Derby

May River’s boys cross country team won the team title and Beaufort High’s Marlon Belden just missed out on the individual crown Saturday at the Cici’s Derby in Camden.

The Shark boys finished with 95 points — two ahead of runner-up Wando — thanks to strong showings from their Nos. 4 and 5 runners. All five of May River’s scoring runners finished in the top 35, and they edged the Warriors despite Wando’s top three finishers beating May River’s top three.

Tristan Kaplan led the Sharks in eighth place with a time of 16:37, while Colin Keck (16:47) was 13th, Mills Campbell (17:15) finished 24th, Sean Hamby (17:23) was 28th, and Jaxon Beebe (17:32) came in 35th.

Beaufort High’s boys had only four runners competing, so the Eagles didn’t post a team score, but they had a strong showing nonetheless. Belden ran a personal-best time of 15:25.70 but was edged at the finish line by Cane Bay’s Zane Jackson (15:25.33). Teammate Nash Mills was sixth in 16:35, Maxwell Davis (16:54) was 16th, and Charlie Bennett (18:50) was 89th.

May River’s girls finished 11th in the strong field. Emma Peluso led the Sharks with a seventh-place finish in 19:47, and Gracyn Drury (21:25) was 24th.
