May River’s softball team came up short in its bid for a district title Wednesday, losing 8-7 at Gilbert.
The Sharks needed to beat the Indians twice to claim the district crown, and they appeared poised to force a winner-take-all second game when they scored two runs in the seventh to tie it. But Gilbert won it on a walk-off single in the bottom of the inning.
Kylee Gleason was 3-for-4, including a solo homer in the seventh, and Peyton Rockwell was 3-for-4 to lead the Sharks at the plate. Giovana Rodriguez and Hannah Manley each had a hit and two RBIs.
Gabby Ximenez took the loss in relief, allowing three runs over 3 1/3 innings.
The Sharks finish the season with a 14-7 record.
