John Paul II’s girls scored a late goal to force overtime, then won in penalties to earn a key region win over Hilton Head Christian Academy on Thursday.
Sydney Desimone converted a penalty kick in the first half to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead, and that’s where the score remained until Merritt Woodham punched in a rebound off a Renee Delgado shot for the equalizer with about 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
JPII’s Abby Quinty saved HHCA’s first attempt in the shootout, and the Eagles misfired on two of their next three efforts, while Woodham, Delgado, and Lauren Riley all converted to give the Golden Warriors the win.
JPII (11-4-1, 3-2) hosts Pinewood Prep at 5:45 p.m. Friday. HHCA (6-6-1, 4-2) hosts Beaufort Academy on April 23.
