HSFB: The Week 9 RBC Heritage Player of the Week Is …

No doubt Week 9 was a big one for Beaufort High.

The Eagles snapped their five-game losing streak and clinched a playoff spot with a 33-18 win over Hilton Head High, earning two of their offensive stars nominations for RBC Heritage Player of the Week honors.

And Beaufort’s big week continued over the past 24 hours, as Eagles fans turned out big time to support wide receiver Reed Reichel and QB/DB Jeffrey Smyth, who combined for just shy of 47 percent of the fan vote.

It was Reichel who garnered the bulk of the support with 41.13 percent — more than double runner-up Stone McDonald’s total of 19.06 percent — to earn the coveted fan vote, but our panel was a little more enamored with his teammate.

McDonald picked up one vote from the panel, but Smyth — who passed for 111 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 138 yards and a score, and turned in three tackles and an interception on defense — snagged the other three, making him the Week 9 RBC Heritage Player of the Week and putting a nice cap on a great week for the Eagles.

Many thanks to the more than 1,000 voters, and congrats to Smyth and the Eagles, who will try to secure a home playoff game with a home win over Colleton County on Friday.
