John Burke tossed a four-hitter Monday as Hilton Head Christian Academy won 2-0 in the opener of its best-of-three SCISA Class 2A playoff series against Calhoun Academy.
Burke struck out six and walked one in the shutout.
The Eagles broke through in the bottom of the third, when they loaded the bases with no outs and scored on Dargan Cherry’s RBI single and Connor Handy’s run-scoring groundout.
Calhoun had runners in scoring position in four of the first five innings, but Burke worked out of trouble each time and retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh.
Game 2 is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Calhoun Academy.
