For the second straight week, the area’s private-school hoops fans stepped up and helped their teams sweep the RBC Heritage High School Basketball Player of the Week honors.
Hilton Head Christian Academy’s Jossie Frazier garnered 63.6 percent of the vote to run away with the girls honors. Frazier earned my vote, as well, after averaging 21.5 points in two wins for the Eagles last week.
The Eagles nearly swept the honors this week, but John Paul II’s Amere Cherry (30 percent) made a late surge to edge Hilton Head Christian’s Floyd Hargrove (24.7 percent) and Hilton Head High’s Davis Molloy (22.1 percent) for boys honors. I gave my vote to Bluffton’s Jermaine Patterson, who averaged 33 points in a pair of wins, but Cherry’s averages of 21 points and 7.3 rebounds in a 2-1 week certainly made him a deserving candidate.
Congrats to Frazier and Cherry. We’ll do it again next week.
