The USCB soccer team suffered a tough defeat Saturday, as visiting Asbury (Ky.) scored on a corner kick in the 89th minute to claim a 2-1 victory at Fin Land Field.

Mia Wiersema’s volley of a corner kick from Brittany Lawson found the back of the net with 1:17 left in regulation, capping a frustrating afternoon for the Sand Sharks. USCB outshot the Eagles 17-9 and had 11 shots on goal to Asbury’s five but didn’t earn a result.

“Unfortunately we were not able to get into a groove today,” USCB coach Ed Heberling said. “Their midfield outplayed us and was able to control the game.”

The match was scoreless until the 49th minute, when Lawson ripped a left-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard line to give Asbury a 1-0 lead.

The Sand Sharks found the equalizer in the 68th minute, as Rileigh Olsen played Daniella Borjas through for a 1-on-1 finish and her second goal of the season.

USCB had chances to score a go-ahead goal, but Asbury keeper Brooke Perkins turned away 10 shots and the Eagles broke through on the late set piece.

USCB (1-1) continues its season-opening home stand next week, facing Middle Georgia at 5 p.m. Friday at Fin Land Field.

“The season is still young, and we still have work to do to get to where we need to be,” Heberling said. “I still believe we have the opportunity to be very successful. We will get better this week and look forward to playing at home again next Friday.”
