The Skinny: Colleton Prep is just two years removed from playing for a state title and finished 8-4 last year despite star QB Cole Davis battling injuries much of the season. Davis walked on at Alabama this fall, so a rebuilding year could be on tap this fall, but Greg Langdale’s teams have come out strong in the opener the last two seasons. John Paul II enters its second season under Shayne Milligan with its own massive hole to fill at QB, as well as on defense and special teams, with the graduation of versatile star Christian Tilton.
Players to watch: JPII QB Connor Brown needs to manage the game and take care of the ball while allowing RB Bryant Jolley and a collection of capable receivers to work … TE/DE Sean Phalen (6-5, 220) has an impressive frame for a sophomore and displays excellent footwork, so he could be an impact player on both sides … DL Sebastian Slusne racked up 95 tackles (8 TFL) last season and leads a defense that should be especially tough against the run … CPA QBs Cale Owens and Charlie Walker (Colleton Co. transfer) may split time under center … OL/LB Cayson Warner is an anchor on both sides of the ball along with RB/LB Walker Bryan, and DL Carter Sims will help form a strong defensive front.
