The Skinny: HHCA is opening its SCISA 3A state title defense, but the Eagles return only three starters on each side of the ball, and one of the defensive starters is now the QB1, so some early growing pains could be in order. Porter-Gaud is coming off a 9-3 season and figures to be a contender in SCISA 4A with most of its offensive firepower returning and a strong core back on defense.
Players to watch: HHCA QB Reid McCollum takes over under center after starring at OLB last season and has a big-time arm and the frame of a prototypical pocket passer … OT/NG Ethan Hames is listed at 6-4, 311 pounds, and he’s only a sophomore. With significant development this season, he could garner major college interest … K Ian Kelly has a D1 leg and could give the Eagles an edge in a close game … Porter-Gaud SS Tony Brown collected 70 tackles (8 TFL) last season while FS Chase Anderson is the top returning tackler with 76 (7 TFL) … QB Nolen Shuman is a dual threat who rushed for 631 yards and 7 TDs a year ago while completing 53 percent of his passes for 644 yards with 6 TDs and 4 INTs … RB Jammall Fludd rushed for 2,172 yards and 35 TDs last season.
