GLAX: Seahawks showcase skills in two region wins

Hilton Head High girls lacrosse bounced back with a pair of dominant victories last week, crushing James Island on the road 17-9 on Monday before downing May River 20-4 back at home Thursday.

The Seahawks used their prowess in the draw control Monday at James Island to race out to an 8-0 lead before swelling the lead to 12-3 at halftime. The Trojans came out motivated to begin the second half and outscored Hilton Head High 6-5, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Seahawks’ hot start. Sarah Kate Shupp led the offense, scoring three goals while dishing out two assists. Anna Ferrebee notched three goals plus an assist while Ashley Ames, Bailey Olive, Allie Jeffrey, and Ella Christie added two goals each.

Hilton Head High showcased its ferocious defense back at the Nest on Thursday in a 20-4 rout of May River. The Seahawks excelled in the draw circle and used their suffocating defensive play to force 16 turnovers and scoop up 46 ground balls en route to a 14-2 halftime advantage.

Kara Cooke’s squad kept up its intensity in the second half to deny the Sharks easy looks at the goal and wrap up a second straight victory. Sofia Cavano netted a career-high five goals, and Ferrebee recorded an eight-point night with five goals and three assists. Olive and Maddie Massey tallied three goals each, and Christie led her team with 10 ground balls.

Lola Spires had two goals and an assist to lead the Sharks.

Hilton Head High (8-3, 6-2) travels to Beaufort High on Monday, while May River (7-6, 4-4) hosts James Island on Monday.
