HS BLAX: Sharks put it all together to pound Trojans

May River boys lacrosse ran its winning streak to four games and stayed perfect against Class 4A Lower State competition with a 19-10 home win over James Island on Thursday.

Nine different May River players recorded points with Brooks Van Esselstyn (4G, 1A), Whitt Beebe (4G, 1A), and Andrew Dromsky (2G, 3A) leading the way with five points each, and midfielder Thomas Raisch recording his first career hat trick and adding an assist. Reece Simonson (1G, 2A), Mike Mosteller (2G, 1A), and Jake Ridgway (3A) each recorded three points, long stick midfielder Jacob Bollinger scored twice, and Sam Mayo added a goal.

“We took the last two days at practice and focused on the skills and situations we were struggling with over the past two games and the work from earlier in the week showed up tonight,” May River coach Tom Dyer said. “I am very proud of our players for focusing on us and our goals and not on our opponents, especially the region ones. We’re in a great spot about halfway through the season and we’re going to continue to put ourselves in the best spot possible for the playoffs.”

The Sharks were able to cause turnovers and push the pace on offense, leading to a 10-1 advantage after one quarter and a 17-3 halftime lead, the largest in program history. Bollinger led the way with three caused turnovers, while freshman Will Rowley caused two turnovers and led the team with five groundballs.

“I think we executed all night, we didn’t have a single penalty so we were playing under control and doing what we were coached to do,” junior faceoff specialist Alex Dunton said. “It was pretty cool to see how we all worked together, and hopefully we can carry that over the rest of the season.”

The Sharks (6-1, 4-0) are back in action Monday in Mount Pleasant against undefeated Lucy Beckham.
