HSBSB: HHCA edges ‘Canes in 8, stays perfect

Kyle Scannell had a big night on the mound and at the plate and Jesse Hall came up big in extra innings as Hilton Head Christian Academy baseball stayed perfect with a 10-8 road win over the Coastal Hurricanes homeschool team in eight innings Monday.

The Eagles put themselves in a tough spot by allowing five runs in the bottom of the second, but they got them all back in the top of the third, sending 10 batters to the plate and tying it on Kyle Scannell’s RBI double.

Coastal rallied with two outs in the fifth to score twice, taking advantage of a pair of HHCA errors, but the Eagles once again responded swiftly. Matt Scarpa came through with a one-out double to score one run, Morgan Bedenbaugh pushed across another with an infield single, and Scarpa scored the go-ahead run on an error.

The Hurricanes tied it with a run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, but Scarpa led off the eighth with a single and scored on Jesse Hall’s double to left before Hall scored on a passed ball to make it a two-run cushion. Coastal put the tying runs on with a pair of two-out errors by the Eagles, but Scannell handled a grounder back to the mound to seal the win.

Scannell was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Scarpa went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI, and three runs, Bedenbaugh was 2-for-5 with a run and a pair of RBIs, and Hall went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI to lead HHCA at the plate.

Eddy struck out six and walked three over 3.1 innings of relief of starter Hayden Brooks, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits, to keep the Eagles in it, and Scannell earned the win with 3.1 innings of strong relief to close it out, striking out three and allowing two runs (one earned).

HHCA (5-0) hosts rival Hilton Head Prep for a difficult test Tuesday.
