MGOLF: Sand Sharks show well in Savannah D1 event

USCB golf put on an excellent performance against a strong NCAA Division I lineup at the Savannah Intercollegiate on Saturday and Sunday at Crosswinds Golf Club, taking sixth place out of 16 teams thanks to a 2-under 214 from Dawson Peters. 

Peters started off the weekend with a red-hot 3-under 69 to take sole possession of fourth, but he cooled off a bit with a 71 and 74 to finish in a tie for sixth. Jacob Thomas rebounded after an opening-round 76, carding a pair of 1-under 71s in the second and third rounds to surge into a tie for 16th place at a 2-over 218.

Tyler Fox notched a top-20 finish with a 3-over 219, recording a team-high 15 birdies throughout the weekend. After shooting a first-round 77, Jonas Demant finished strong with an even-par 72 in the final two rounds to tie for 25th place at a 5-over 239. Brayden Ogle rounded out the Sand Shark lineup, carding a three-round total of 239.

USCB recorded the second-most birdies in the tournament with 55 and excelled on par-5s with an outstanding combined score of 21-under to post its second-lowest team score this season at an 8-over 872.

Troy University (8-under 856)  took the team title with a two-shot victory over Southern Illinois, and SIU’s Matthis Besard (16-under 200) took individual honors with a dominant eight-stroke win. 

USCB returns to the course on March 6-March 8 for the Panther Invitational in Melbourne, Fla.
