USCB baseball bounced back with a pair of dominant offensive performances Tuesday in Hardeeville, downing Brewton-Parker 10-2 in a previously suspended game and 12-4 in a full nine-inning contest.
The two teams resumed their game that started on Feb. 4 with USCB trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Brewton-Parker’s Trey Jones continued his outing that he started over two weeks ago and struck out two USCB batters to strand a pair of runners in scoring position. But the Sand Shark offense erupted in the third, scoring six runs in the frame to jump out in front 6-2.
John Leland got his team on the scoreboard with a bases-loaded walk, and Nikko Andre drilled a two-run single before Russ sizzled a double to left-center field to make it 5-2. Tanner capped off the big inning, connecting on an RBI single for a 6-2 lead. After making a sensational diving grab in right field in the top of the fourth, Leandy Castro crushed a solo home run in the bottom half to extend the margin to five runs.
USCB’s Robbie Brown crossed the plate in the fifth, and the Sand Sharks tacked on two more in the sixth thanks to a Castro double and Leland sacrifice fly. Brian Bromley finished the job on the mound, recording a strikeout and two flyouts in the seventh to seal the win.
Castro showcased his power at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two RBI. Andre continued his strong start to the season, finishing 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Bromley and Payton MacPherson shut down the Barons out of the bullpen, combining for four no-hit innings and five strikeouts.
Similar to game one, Brewton-Parker’s offense got the early jump with four runs in the top of the first inning. But the Sand Sharks began to chip away in the bottom half, scoring two runs on sacrifice flies from Russ and Clint Sellars.
The lead was cut to one in the second on a run-scoring hit from catcher Brevon Harper, and USCB jumped ahead in the fourth on a wild pitch scoring Leland and Tanner before Brown scored Wesley Ambrose to go up 6-4. Brock Thibodeaux padded the lead in the bottom of the fifth, poking a single through the right side for a 7-4 advantage.
The Sand Shark offense kept rolling in the sixth, as Sellars launched his second home run of the season before a wild pitch and hit batsman swelled the lead to 10-4. USCB capped off the day with two more in the seventh on RBI-hits from Russ and Thibodeaux for a commanding 12-4 lead. Jack Wood threw a hitless eighth inning for the Sand Sharks, and Tucker Perry shut the door in the ninth to complete the two-game sweep of the Barons.
Russ went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Thibodeaux and Harper each collected two hits, and Sellars went 1-for-4 with a solo home run. Tucker Dove pitched 2.2 strong innings of relief with one hit allowed while picking up two strikeouts, and Brandon Martin impressed in his three innings of work with one hit and five strikeouts across the fifth and sixth frames.
May River alumnus Riley Stokes had another stellar outing on the mound, giving up just one hit in his inning of work while picking up two strikeouts.
