HSBSB: Eagles open Wilkerson’s tenure with pair of shutouts

Hilton Head Christian Academy baseball has opened its first season under new coach JW Wilkerson with a pair of shutout victories over the Coastal Hurricanes homeschool program and Bridges Prep.

The Eagles blanked the Hurricanes 8-0 on Monday before routing the Bucs 20-0 on Tuesday as the pitching staff allowed just three hits across the first two games.

HHCA scored four runs in the first inning against Coastal, and a trio of pitchers ensured it held up with a dominant effort. Starter Kyle Scannell allowed three hits and struck out three over 3.1 innings who;e hitting two batters, Walker Mikkelson struck out four and walked one in 1.2 hitless frames, and James Crosby picked up four strikeouts over the final two innings, allowing just one walk.

Keene Reese led the Eagles at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs, and three RBIs. Dylan Clark and Morgan Bedenbaugh each added a pair of singles and an RBI.

A day later against Bridges, the Eagles sent 25 batters to the plate in the first inning, plating 20 runs in the frame before emptying the bench for the rest of the game, and Hayden Brooks and Ben Eddy combined on a four-inning no-hitter.

Brooks struck out four and walked three over two innings, and Eddy had one strikeout and one walk over the final two frames.

HHCA (2-0) plays Frederica Academy for a home-and-home series beginning at home Thursday.
