HSBBB: Sharks stumble in second half vs. South Aiken

May River boys basketball went cold in the second half and saw a 10-point halftime lead slip away in a 52-49 loss at South Aiken on Thursday in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

The Sharks led by two after a quarter and dominated the second period to build a 32-22 advantage at halftime, as Gavin Blocker scored nine of his 13 points in the first half and Garvin Douglas added eight of his 13 in the opening period.

But May River struggled at the offensive end after the break, and South Aiken’s KJ Jenkins heated up. Jenkins scored seven of his 13 points in the third quarter as the Thoroughbreds outscored the Sharks 11-4 to close the gap to three points.

Then Xavier Holley took the hot hand for South Aiken, knocking down three buckets in the fourth quarter, and Delwin Hodge finished off his 21-point night with 10 points in the fourth quarter to close out the comeback.

Blocker finished with 13 points and nine boards to lead the Sharks but couldn’t find the range from beyond the arc, going 2-for-13. Douglas added 13 points and six rebounds, and James Layman collected seven points, six rebounds, and seven assists in their May River finales.

The Sharks finish their season with a 12-10 record, while South Aiken will face Wilson in the second round Saturday.
