Hilton Head High boys basketball dropped an overtime heartbreaker to end its season Thursday, falling at Hartsville 54-50 as the Red Foxes avenged last season’s Lower State championship loss to the Seahawks.
It was a strong start for Chane Brown’s squad, as the ‘Hawks built a 16-13 lead after the opening quarter and took a 24-22 advantage at halftime thanks to eight first-half points from Jourdin Nelson-Davis.
Senior Jeremiah Stevens gave Hilton Head a spark in the second half to go up 37-34 after three before Tristan Alexander and the Red Foxes clawed their way back in the fourth to force overtime.
Zac Morris and Matthew Larkby put up three crucial points each in the extra session, but the Seahawks couldn’t stop DeAndre Huggins as Hartsville secured the overtime victory and eliminated the defending Lower State champions.
Huggins took over down the stretch, scoring 16 points, including six in overtime, while Alexander put up 15 of his game-high 17 points after halftime. Morris led the Seahawks with 13 points, and Stevens scored all 12 of his points in the second half.
Hilton Head High finishes the season with a record of 12-11, while Hartsville will travel to North Augusta in the second round.
